With summer come vacations and more free time, especially for the youth. I thought it would be good to provide some ideas for good summer reading for teens and adults.
LIVES OF THE SAINTS
There are tremendous historical novels on various saints that will grab and keep your attention. Louis de Wohl has written at least twenty on such saints as Ignatius of Loyola – founder of the Jesuits; Francis Xavier – the greatest missionary since St. Paul; Catherine of Siena – mystic, stigmatist, counselor of popes; Augustine – major sinner turned saint; and many more. Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson has also written some terrific novels. One that stands out is Come Rack, Come Rope, about the plight of English Catholics in the years of Elizabethan persecution. In a similar vein, Walter Macken has written three gripping novels on the plight of the Irish Catholics during English persecution. Finally, Fr. Owen Francis Dudley has written the ‘Masterful Monk’ series. It is set in early 20th century England and deals with modern ideologies.
If your interest is in ‘pure’ history, you may want to try some of Dr. Warren Carroll’s histories, particularly Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Conquest of Darkness on Cortes and the apparitions of Our Lady in Mexico City, The Guillotine and the Cross on the French Revolution, and Red Banners, White Mantle on the Communist Revolution and apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917. Each reads as a story, yet is filled with footnotes. Our local historian, Mr. Steve Weidenkopf has also written good histories. His recent book, A Light from Darkness, explores various times in history when the Church suffered through scandal. He shows how the Church became stronger than She had been before the scandal.
APOLOGETICS
There are plenty of apologetical works out there thanks in many ways to the many Protestant converts who have written about the truth of the Faith. A few of these works that can be mentioned:
- Karl Keating – Catholicism and Fundamentalism, and What Catholics Really Believe.
- Patrick Madrid – Surprised by Truth I, II or III. Each recounts eleven conversion stories.
- Scott Hahn – Rome Sweet Home, amongst many
- Kevin O. Johnson – Why do Catholics do That?
- Fr. Frank Chacon and Jim Burnham – Beginning Apologetics

Con el verano vienen las vacaciones y más tiempo libre, especialmente para los jóvenes. Yo pensé que sería bueno proveer ideas para leer buenos libros durante el verano para adolescentes y adultos.
VIDAS DE LOS SANTOS
Hay tremendas novelas históricas acerca de varios santos que les va a llamar la atención. Louis de Wohl ha escrito por lo menos veinte de tales historias como la de Ignacio de Loyola – fundador de los Jesuitas (El Hilo de Oro); Francisco Xavier – el mayor misionero desde San Pablo ((El Oriente en Llamas); Catalina de Siena – mística, consejera de Papas (Al Asalto del Cielo) y muchos más. Monseñor Robert Hugh Benson también ha escrito magníficas novelas que han sido traducidas al español. Una que sobresale es ¡A la Horca! Acerca del heroísmo de los mártires durante el reinado de Isabel I, hija del rey Enrique VIII y Ana Bolena. Finalmente, el Padre Owen Francis Dudley ha escrito Sombra en la Tierra, una historia de tragedia y de triunfo.
Si su interés es historia ‘pura’, a lo mejor le gusten los libros del Dr. Warren Carroll, estos libros no están traducidos al español pero son muy buenos, especialmente el de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Conquest of Darkness acerca de Cortés y las apariciones de Nuestra Señora en la ciudad de México. La Guillotina y la Cruz, The Guillotine and the Cross acerca de la Revolución Francesa y Red Banners, White Mantle acerca de la Revolución Comunista y las apariciones de Nuestra Señora de Fátima en 1917. Su libro más reciente Una Luz en la Oscuridad, A Light from Darkness, explora varias épocas en la historia cuando la Iglesia estaba llena de escándalos.
