Well, our Ash Wednesday will coincide with St. Valentine’s Day this year! How
many insights between the two ‘celebrations’ can be made! As I tend to insert my
foot into my mouth, ever more capably as I get older, I will avoid drawing any
parallels!?! (It is also good to keep in mind those three beautiful words in this
season, ‘Pitchers, catchers, report!’)
Lent is an awesome season to pull back from the world, its pleasures, its
technology and its myriad of activities. In so doing, we are able to focus the true
meaning and purpose of human life: loving God and our neighbor.
As we move through Lent it may seem as if it is a drudgery. Yet, new habits are
formed by God’s grace. We become free; less attached to the world. We find
more time to spend with God in prayer; with family in conversation and
wholesome activities – perhaps, a good, old-fashioned game night; in reading and
hobbies; etc.
Of course, there are some, particularly the youth, who may think their lives would
end if they had to do without technology for a few hours not to mention a few
days or even 40 Days! Give it a try! Technology is so much of a ‘virtual’ reality.
How much of it does not exist – games, ‘activities’, etc? When it is all said and
done, how often does technology just cause me to be alone; unable to truly
interact with other people; almost afraid of looking someone in the eye and
spending time with another person – in person? What freedom could come from
a very limited diet of technology? Or, even text-free?!
Rather than ‘playing’ a digital game, why not actually play a game outside with
my brother/sister – shoot some hoops, throw the ball, or kick the ball around?
Why not go for a walk/ride with Mom or Dad? (All without the interruption of
technology!)
Our penances should allow us to spend time with Our Lord, our family and
friends.

Bien, ¡nuestro Miércoles de Ceniza va a coincidir con el Día de San Valentín! ¡Cuántas percepciones se pueden hacer entre las dos ‘celebraciones’! Como tiendo a meter mi pie en mi boca, más hábilmente cada vez a medida que envejezco, ¡¿¡voy a evitar traer esos paralelos!?! (También es bueno tener en mente esas tres hermosas palabras de esta temporada, ‘lanzadores, receptores, reporten!’)
La Cuaresma es una increíble temporada para sacarnos del mundo, sus placeres su tecnología y su infinidad de actividades. Al hacerlo vamos a poder enfocarnos en el verdadero propósito de la vida humana: amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo.
Mientras vamos a través de la Cuaresma puede parecer como si fuera una monotonía. Sin embargo, con la gracia de Dios se forman nuevos hábitos. Nos volvemos libres; menos apegados al mundo. Encontramos más tiempo para pasar en oración; en conversación con la familia y actividades saludables – tal vez, hasta una buena, pasada de moda noche de juegos; leyendo y pasatiempos; etc.
Por supuesto, hay algunos, especialmente los jóvenes, que a lo mejor piensan que sus vidas van a terminar si tienen que estar sin tecnología por unas pocas horas, sin mencionar unos días ¡o aun 40 Días! ¡Traten! La tecnología es en gran medida una realidad ‘virtual’. ¿Cuánto de eso no existe – juegos, ‘actividades’, etc.? Cuando todo está dicho y hecho, ¿con qué frecuencia la tecnología me hace estar solo? Sin poder interactuar realmente con otras personas; casi asustado de ver a alguien a los ojos y de pasar tiempo con otra persona – ¿en persona? ¿Qué libertad puede venir de una muy limitada dieta de tecnología? ¡¿O, de estar libre de textos?!
En vez de ‘jugar’ un juego digital, ¿por qué no jugar verdaderamente un juego al aire libre con mi hermano(a)? – ¿tirar algunos aros, lanzar la pelota, patear la pelota? ¿Por qué no salir a una caminar/conducir con papa o mama? (¡Todo sin la interrupción de la tecnología!)
Nuestras penitencias deberían permitirnos pasar más tiempo con Nuestro Señor, nuestra familia y amigos.
