The following is our Bishop’s National Letter on In Virto Fertilization (IVF):
“The national conversation in the news about laws related to in vitro fertilization and other technologies creates an opportunity and a necessity to speak about protecting the gift of life itself. Each of our lives has immeasurable value from the moment of conception. In this way, we know that the deeply-rooted desire to bring about new life by having children is good. As priests and bishops, we grieve with and accompany in hope and love the increasing number of families suffering with an experience of infertility. We also encourage restorative, often-overlooked, treatments that can help to address the root causes of infertility.
“It is precisely because each person’s life is a unique gift that we cannot condone procedures that violate the right to life or the integrity of the family. Certain practices like IVF do both, and they are often not effective even for their own purposes.
“Children have a right to be born to their married mother and father, through a personal act of self-giving love. IVF, however well-intended, breaches this bond and these rights and, instead, treats human beings like products or property. This is all the more true in situations involving anonymous donors or surrogacy. This of course does not mean that our brothers and sisters who were conceived by IVF are somehow ‘less than’ anyone else. Every person has immeasurable value regardless of how he or she was conceived – and that applies, absolutely, to all children created through IVF, the majority of whom have not been and may never be born.
“The fact is that, in the IVF industry, many embryos are never transferred to a mother’s womb, but are destroyed or indefinitely frozen, and, of those who are transferred, only a fraction survive to be eventually born. All told, there are millions of human beings who have been killed or potentially permanently frozen by this industry. This cannot be the answer to the very real cross of fertility challenges. In efforts to bring about new life, we cannot turn our face from the many more lives that are cut short and extinguished in the process.”
On February 28th, Bishop Burbidge was joined by three other bishop chairmen of the USCCB in a letter to the U.S. Senate opposing the Access to Family Building Act and similar legislation that would greatly widen the use of various problematic assisted reproductive technologies nationwide. It should be noted that the Pope Paul VI Institute in Omaha, Ne. has been helping women with infertility for decades. The Institute operates completely according to the Catholic Church’s teachings. When I last checked, it had a higher conception-to-birth rate than any IVF clinic!

La siguiente es la Carta Nacional referente a la Fertilización In Vitro (IVF por sus siglas en inglés) de Nuestro Obispo:
“La conversación nacional en las noticias acerca del proyecto de ley relacionado a la fertilización in vitro y otras técnicas, crea la oportunidad y una necesidad de hablar acerca de proteger el don de la vida misma. Cada una de nuestras vidas tiene un valor inmensurable desde el momento de la concepción. De esta forma, sabemos que el deseo, profundamente arraigado de traer nueva vida, al tener hijos, es bueno. Como sacerdotes y obispos, nos lamentamos y acompañamos con esperanza y amor el incremento de familias que sufren con la experiencia de la infertilidad. También animamos los tratamientos restauradores que muchas veces son ignorados, para ayudar a atender el origen de las causas de la infertilidad.
“Precisamente porque la vida de cada persona es un don único, es que no podemos condonar los procedimientos que violan el derecho a la vida o la integridad de la familia. Ciertas prácticas como IVF hacen las dos cosas, y a menudo no son efectivas aún para sus propios propósitos.
“Los niños tienen derecho a nacer de su padre y madre casados, a través de un acto de amor personal de auto-entrega. IVF, a pesar ser bienintencionado, viola este vínculo y estos derechos, y en su lugar, trata a los seres humanos como productos o propiedad. Esto es más certero en situaciones que involucran donantes anónimos o surrogacia (maternidad de alquiler). Esto por supuesto no significa que nuestros hermanos que ya han concebido a través de IVF son de alguna manera ‘menos que’ cualquier otra persona. Cada persona tiene un valor inmensurable sin importar como fue concebido – y eso aplica, absolutamente, a todos los niños creados a través de IVF, la mayoría de los cuales no han y talvez nunca nazcan.
“El hecho es que, en la industria de IVF, muchos embriones nunca van a ser transferidos al vientre de una madre, pero son destrozados o congelados definitivamente, y, de los que son transferidos, solo una fracción sobrevive a nacer eventualmente. Dicho todo, hay millones de seres humanos que han sido matados o potencialmente puestos en congelación permanentemente por esta industria. Esta no puede ser la respuesta a la muy real cruz a los retos de la fertilidad. A los esfuerzos de traer una vida, no podemos dale vuelta a la cara de muchas más vidas que han sido cortadas y extinguidas en el proceso.”
El 28 de febrero, al Obispo Burbidge se le unieron tres Obispos más del directorio de la USCCB (Conferencia de Obispos de los Estados Unidos, por sus siglas en inglés) en una carta al Senado de los Estados Unidos, oponiéndose al Proyecto de Ley de Acceso a Construir una Familia y una legislación similar que ampliaría grandemente el uso de varias técnicas de asistencia a la reproducción problemáticas nacionalmente. Debemos notar que el Instituto Pablo VI en Omaha, NE, por décadas ha estado ayudando a mujeres con infertilidad. El instituto opera completamente de acuerdo a las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica. ¡La última vez que lo comprobé, tenía una taza de concepción al parto más alta de cualquier clínica de IVF!
