As we continue our consideration of the landmark encyclical of Blessed Pope Paul VI, the question may arise: “If a couple is facing serious/grave circumstances – physical, economic, psychological or social – there seems to be no option to avoid pregnancy based on the Church’s teaching.” This is not correct.
Yes, Pope Paul VI re-iterated the constant teaching of Christ and His Church that each and every marital act must be unitive and pro-creative. This does not mean, however, that every marital act must result in the conception of a child. Pope Paul speaks of licit means for a couple to avoid pregnancy by applying the natural times of infertility in a woman. In other words, a couple would enter into marital relations only when the woman is infertile. This is very different from a couple entering into the conjugal act and then doing something directly to stop a child.
Since the Pope issued Humanae Vitae faithful Catholic laymen and women, particularly in the medical field, have developed legitimate, moral and effective means to help couples avoid pregnancy (and also to achieve pregnancy). In general, these methods are called Natural Family Planning (NFP). There are a number of such methods. The basis of NFP is a couple, particularly the wife, knowing the signs of fertility and infertility. In addition, it requires a mutual self-mastery amongst the spouses if there is serious reason to avoid pregnancy. In doing so, a couple must communicate and work to love each other in various ways. As a result, less than 5% of couples that use NFP experience divorce.
Some may say that NFP cannot be trusted. Actually, when learned and applied correctly, NFP is as effective, or even, more effective in avoiding pregnancy than any contraceptive. There is also a mindset in NFP that ultimately, God is in control, not man. NFP by definition is very different from ‘Artificial Birth Control’ (ABC). In ABC the couple again falls prey to the wiles of the devil when he tempted Eve to eat the apple: “You will become like gods.” ABC is about control – being like God.
Some may still say that “our situation is so tenuous that Mom cannot risk in the slightest to get pregnant.” Again, God is our merciful, loving Father. It seems people can forget this essential quality of God when speaking of babies, pregnancy and serious health risks. God is the one Who creates a baby! Shouldn’t there be a good bit of prayer and petition to God in these situations?
In addition, there is a tremendous organization attached to the Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Ne. The Pope Paul VI Institute is a medical center for the study of human reproduction which is completely in union with the Catholic Church’s teachings. It is unique in that it looks at each woman individually to help her. It seeks to heal and cure women with various physical challenges. It makes the strong claim that there is never a reason to prescribe artificial birth control to heal a woman. In addition, the NaPro technology used by the Pope Paul VI Institute to help couples achieve pregnancy boasts a higher success rate than IVF techniques.
Saint Pope Paul VI was truly a prophet. His words remind us of Our Lord’s words: “The Truth will set you free!”

Mientras continuamos considerando la trascendental encíclica de San Papa Pablo VI, surge la pregunta, si una pareja está enfrentando circunstancias serias/graves – físicas, económicas, psicológicas o sociales – “¿parece no haber opción para evitar un embarazo basándose en la enseñanza de la Iglesia?” Esto no es correcto.
Si, el Papa Pablo VI reiteró la constante enseñanza de Cristo y de Su Iglesia de que todo y cada acto marital debe ser unitivo y procreativo. Esto no significa, sin embargo, que cada acto marital debe resultar en la concepción de un niño(a). El Papa habla de medios lícitos que una pareja puede usar para evitar el embarazo aplicando los tiempos naturales de infertilidad en la mujer. En otras palabras, una pareja puede entrar en relaciones maritales solamente cuando la mujer es infértil. Esto es muy diferente a una pareja entrando en el acto marital haciendo algo para detener directamente la llegada de un niño(a).
Desde que el Papa publicó Humanae Vitae, fieles católicos laicos, hombres y mujeres, particularmente en el campo médico, han desarrollado medios legítimos, morales y efectivos para ayudar a las parejas a evitar embarazos (y también lograr embarazos). En general, estos métodos son llamados Planificación Familiar Natural (NFP por sus siglas en inglés). Hay un buen número de dichos métodos. La base del NFP es la pareja, particularmente la esposa, conociendo los signos de fertilidad e infertilidad. Además, requiere un autodominio entre los esposos si de verdad hay una razón seria para evitar el embarazo. Al hacerlo, la pareja debe comunicarse y trabajar para amarse de otras maneras diferentes. Como resultado, menos del 5% de las parejas que usan NFP experimentan un divorcio.
Algunos dirán que no se puede confiar en NFP. La realidad es que, cuando se aprende correctamente, el NFP es tan efectivo, o aún más efectivo al prevenir el embarazo que cualquier anticonceptivo. También, en NFP está la mentalidad de que Dios está en control, no el hombre. NFP por definición es muy diferente al ‘Control de Natalidad Artificial’ (ABC por sus siglas en inglés). En el ABC, la pareja cae presa de las artimañas del demonio como cuando tienta a Eva para comer la manzana: “Tu serás como los dioses”. ABC se trata del control – querer ser como Dios.
Algunos todavía dirán que “nuestra situación es tan débil que mamá no se puede arriesgar a quedar embarazada”. Una vez más, Dios es nuestro misericordioso y amoroso Padre. Parece que a la gente se le olvida esta cualidad esencial de Dios cuando se habla de bebés, embarazos y serios riesgos de salud. ¡Dios es QUIEN crea un bebé! ¿No debería haber una buena cantidad de oraciones y peticiones a Dios en estas situaciones?
Además, hay una tremenda organización anexa a la Universidad de la Escuela de Medicina Creighton en Omaha, NE. El Instituto Papa Paul VI es un centro médico para el estudio de la reproducción humana, el cual está en completa unión con las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica. Es único en que ve a cada mujer individualmente para ayudarla. Busca sanar y curar a mujeres con varios retos. Hace la fuerte declaración de que nunca hay una razón para recetar anticonceptivos para curar a una mujer. Además, la tecnología NaPro que se usa en el Instituto Papa Paul VI para ayudar a las parejas a obtener un embarazo tiene un éxito mayor al de las técnicas de Fertilidad In-Vitro.
San Pablo VI fue realmente un profeta. Sus palabras nos recuerdan las palabras de Nuestro Señor: “¡La verdad te hará libre!”
