What must have been the emotions of Our Lady and the Apostles on Good Friday evening! Though Blessed Mother remembered Our Lord’s promise that He would rise from the dead, she still suffered incredibly at His Suffering and Death.
What were the emotions of the Apostles? Of the Twelve, Judas had betrayed Jesus. He later hung himself! Peter, the leader of the Apostles, had denied Jesus three times the prior night. After Peter’s denial, Jesus looked piercingly into his soul. We are told in the Gospels that Peter left and wept. We do not know if the two ever made eye contact again. We are not told Peter even saw Jesus again on Good Friday. Nine other Apostles, except John, ran away Thursday night. We are not told they accompanied the crowd to Jesus’ Crucifixion. John is the only one to accompany Jesus to His Death. And, yet, he was incredulous on Easter Sunday when told by Mary Magdalene that Jesus had Risen from the dead!
At the most crucial event with Jesus, all of the Apostles, save the youngest, failed Him! They also thought Jesus was gone; and, with Him, the previous three years’ experiences. They would have been ashamed, discouraged, sad, afraid, hopeless, anxious, lonely and without purpose. Many saints and spiritual writers believe each one would have found his way back to the one whose faith never wavered: the Blessed Virgin Mary. She would have comforted them. Still, the Eleven found it hard to believe Mary Magdalene on Easter Sunday.
Jesus allowed the Apostles to endure the above emotions – and more. On Easter Sunday and following, He would bring them His Love, Joy, Peace, Long-Suffering, Hope, Faith and Guidance.
How many of us feel the same emotions as the Apostles?! (Peter is one I tend to think of.) Our Lord wants to give us a deeper faith, love, joy, peace and hope. He will not appear to us in bodily form. He is Really, Truly and Substantially present in our midst: in the tabernacle, in the monstrance and at every Mass!
May we ask Our Lady to console us and pray for us to her Son! May we experience a deeper faith, love, joy peace and hope as we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection!

¡Cuales deben haber sido las emociones de Nuestra Señora y los Apóstoles el Viernes Santo por la tarde! A pesar de que la Santísima Madre recordaba la promesa de Nuestro Señor de que Él iba a levantarse de entre los muertos, todavía sufrió increíblemente con Su Sufrimiento y Muerte.
¿Cuáles eran las emociones de los Apóstoles? De los Doce, Judas había traicionado a Jesús. ¡Después se cuelga! Pedro, el líder de los Apóstoles, había negado a Jesús tres veces la noche anterior. Después de la negación de Pedro, Jesús vio su alma de forma punzante. Los Evangelios nos dicen que Pedro se fue y lloro desconsolado. No sabemos si los dos tuvieron contacto visual después. No nos dicen si Pedro vio a Jesús de nuevo el Viernes Santo. Nueve de los otros Apóstoles, excepto Juan, huyen el jueves por la noche. No nos dicen si ellos acompañaron a la multitud a la Crucifixión de Jesús. Juan es el único que acompaña a Jesús a su Muerte. Y, aun así, ¡él estuvo incrédulo el Domingo de Pascua cuando María Magdalena le dijo que Jesús se había Levantado de entre los muertos!
¡En el momento más crucial de Jesús, todos los Apóstoles, sin contar al más joven, le fallaron! Ellos también pensaron que Jesús se había ido; y, con Él, las experiencias de los tres años anteriores. Deben de haber estado avergonzados, desanimados, tristes, asustados, sin esperanza, ansiosos, en soledad y sin propósito. Muchos santos y escritores espirituales, creen que cada uno debe haber encontrado su camino de regreso quien su fe nunca titubeo: la Santísima Virgen María. Ella los debe haber consolado. Aun así, los Once encontraron difícil de creerle a María Magdalena el Domingo de Pascua.
Jesús le permitió a los Apóstoles sufrir las emociones anteriores – y más. El Domingo de Resurrección y después, Él les traería Su Amor, Alegría, Paz, Largo Sufrimiento, Esperanza, Fe y Dirección.
¡¿Cuántos de nosotros sentimos las mismas emociones de los Apóstoles?! (Pedro es en quien tiendo a pensar). Nuestro Señor quiere darnos una más profunda fe, amor, alegría, paz y esperanza. Él no se nos va a aparecer en cuerpo. ¡Él está Real, Verdadera y Substancialmente presente en medio de nosotros: en el sagrario, en la custodia y en cada Misa!
¡Ojalá que le pidamos a Nuestra Señora que nos consuele y ore por nosotros a Su Hijo! ¡Ojala que experimentemos una más profunda fe, amor, alegría, paz y esperanza mientras celebramos la Resurrección de Jesús!
