How many of Catholics wear a sacramental? A sacramental is an object or action that is an occasion of grace for us. It is different from sacrament, in that, a sacrament gives grace whenever the action of the sacrament is performed. For example, whenever an unmarried baptized man and unmarried baptized woman pronounce vows to each other of life-long fidelity, indissolubility and openness to children, they receive the sacrament of matrimony. The couple receives grace by the action of their vows – even if they be completely distracted (I know, hard to imagine!). On the other hand, someone may dip his hand into holy water and bless himself, but be completely distracted and receive no grace whatsoever. The difference is between a sacrament and sacramental. The sacrament gives grace by virtue of the action performed as Jesus instituted. The sacramental does not give grace, but is an occasion of grace. Whether the individual receives grace depends on the individual’s disposition. That being said, one’s disposition does have a relationship to the degree of grace he receives when he receives a sacrament. Clear enough?!!
Back to the original question, many wear a sacramental and may not realize it. The wedding rings that a husband and wife wear are sacramentals! They are an occasion of grace for the husband and wife. Every time a husband feels his ring or a wife removes it while washing dishes, it is an occasion to renew one’s love for one’s spouse. If I’m not mistaken, in the World Cup years ago a player kissed his left ring finger after he scored a goal as if to kiss his wedding band and therefore, his wife.
July 16, is the memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is an ancient title of the Blessed Virgin Mary attributed to the Order founded on Mount Carmel. The Carmelites, as many religious orders, wear a long, (brown) scapular over the top of their habit. In the early 1200s a Carmelite saint, St. Simon Stock, asked Our Lord and Our Lady in prayer how lay people could be a part of the Carmelite Order and avail themselves of the spiritual benefits of the Carmelite Order. Our Lady appeared to St. Simon and gave him a much smaller version of the scapular that could be worn under clothing. She further told Simon that anyone who died wearing the Brown Scapular – as it has come to be known – would not suffer the fires of hell. Quite a promise! The understanding is that anyone who wears the sacramental of the Brown Scapular will strive to live a truly Christian life.
In short, the sacramental of the Brown Scapular is an occasion of grace every time it touches one’s skin in so far as the person can renew his love for Our Lord and Our Lady. It is also a reminder of the love of Our Lord and Our Lady for the individual. If you are not in the habit (not meant to be a pun) of wearing a sacramental dedicated to Our Lord and Our Lady, you may want to consider it, especially the Brown Scapular. We have plenty!

¿Cuantos católicos usan sacramentales? Un sacramental es un objeto o acción que tiene la ocasión de obtener una gracia para nosotros. Es diferente al sacramento, ya que, un sacramento da gracia cuando se hace la acción del sacramento. Por ejemplo, cuando un hombre soltero, bautizado se casa con una mujer soltera, bautizada, uno al otro se pronuncian votos de fidelidad de por vida, indisolubilidad y apertura a recibir hijos, ellos reciben el sacramento del matrimonio. La pareja recibe la gracia debido a la acción de sus votos – aun si están completamente distraídos (ya se, ¡difícil de imaginar!). Por otro lado, alguien puede sumergir su mano en Agua Bendita y santificarse a sí mismo estando completamente distraído y no recibir ninguna gracia. La diferencia es entre el sacramento y el sacramental. Un sacramental no da gracia, pero es una ocasión para obtener gracia. Que el individuo reciba gracia depende de la disposición del individuo. Habiendo dicho esto la disposición de uno tiene relación al grado de gracia que recibe cuando recibe el sacramento. ¡¡¡¿Suficientemente claro?!!!
Regresando a la pregunta original, muchos usan un sacramental y no se dan cuenta. ¡Los anillos de matrimonio que usan los esposos son sacramentales! Son una ocasión para obtener gracia para los esposos. Cada vez que el esposo toca su anillo o la esposa se lo quita para lavar los platos, es una ocasión para renovar el amor de uno por el otro. Si no me equivoco, en la Copa Mundial del año pasado un jugador beso su dedo anular izquierdo después de anotar un gol como si besara su anillo matrimonial y por lo tanto, a su esposa.
El 16 de julio es el memorial de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo. Es un título antiguo de la Santísima Virgen María, atribuido a la Orden fundada en el Monte Carmelo. Los Carmelitas, como muchas órdenes religiosas, usan un escapulario largo (café) sobre sus hábitos. A principios de los años 1200 un santo carmelita, San Simón Stock, les preguntó en oración a Nuestro Señor y Nuestra Señora como podían los laicos ser parte de la Orden Carmelita y así tener disponibles los beneficios espirituales de la Orden Carmelita. Nuestra Señora se le apareció a San Simón y le dio una versión mucho más pequeña del escapulario para que lo podía ser usada debajo de la ropa. Ella fue más allá y le dijo a Simón que cualquiera que muriera usando el Escapulario Café – como se dio a conocer – no sufriría del fuego del infierno. ¡Que promesa! Se entiende que cualquiera que use el Escapulario Café sacramental, va a luchar por vivir una vida verdaderamente cristiana.
En corto, el sacramental Escapulario Café, es una ocasión para obtener gracia cada vez que toca la piel de uno mientras que la persona renueve su amor por Nuestro Señor y Nuestra Señora. También es un recordatorio del amor de Nuestro Señor y Nuestra Señora por el individuo. Si ustedes no tienen el hábito (sin intención de hacer un juego de palabras) de usar un sacramental dedicado a Nuestro Señor y Nuestra Señora, a lo mejor quisieran considerarlo, especialmente el Escapulario Café. ¡Tenemos bastantes!
