When was the last time you asked your guardian angel for help? When was the last time you thanked your guardian angel for his help? Perhaps these are questions that oftentimes are dismissed as childish. The whole notion of angels and archangels can sometimes be seen “nice” but not real. What a waste for those who ignore the angels and archangels; our powerful heavenly friends.
Jesus says the following in Matthew 18:10 referring to children: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” Angels are not an optional belief amongst Catholics. Based on the previous words of Jesus, as well as many other words in the Scriptures, angels and archangels exist. In a particular way, some angels are assigned to human beings – guardian angels – as Jesus alludes in the previous passage from Matthew. It is not necessary to convince mothers of small children of this fact. They know well how often their children have been protected from harm for no apparent reason. The more we ask them for their help (and then thank them), the more they act in our lives. Ignore them and they will allow us to go our way. Our guardian angels can help in so many ways: with prayer (overcoming distractions); with sin (overcoming temptations); with guidance (how to approach different persons); with basic needs (homework, directions while driving – mine is overworked); etc.
What are angels? Who are they? An angel is a pure spirit created by God with a superior intelligence and power to man. Angels are not former human beings. They never have had, nor will they ever have, bodies. For this reason, they cannot die; they are immortal. The good angels love mankind. The bad angels – demons/devils – hate man because God became a man and man has the opportunity to go to heaven. Though angels do not have bodies, they have power over matter and can take on bodily form as evidenced throughout the Scriptures.
The archangels would be angels with greater power and purpose than the guardian angels. We know the names of three archangels – Gabriel, Raphael and Michael. We see Gabriel in the gospel of Luke as he appears to Mary and Zechariah announcing the births of Jesus and John the Baptist. Raphael appears in the Old Testament book of Tobit wherein he is instrumental in the cure of Tobit as well as the marriage of Tobias and Sarah. St. Raphael is the patron of doctors as well as interceding to find one’s spouse. Michael we see in the Old Testament book of Daniel and New Testament book of Revelation as the general of God. He drives out of heaven Satan and the bad angels in the book of Revelation. St. Michael is the patron of those who enforce the law and defend the innocent, notably police and military.
Pope Leo XIII (pope from 1878-1903) was given a terrible vision of the 20th century plagued by Satan’s influence. After the vision in 1886, he wrote the St. Michael prayer and directed that it be prayed after every Mass. It was prayed after every Mass until the changes made in 1968 by Pope Paul VI. In 1994 Pope John Paul II asked that the prayer be prayed by the faithful and strongly suggested that the prayer be instituted again after Mass. In light of the evils plaguing our society there are plenty of reasons to invoke St. Michael’s intercession against the Devil.

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que le pediste ayuda a tu Ángel de la Guarda? ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que le agradeciste por su ayuda a tu Ángel de la Guarda? A lo mejor estas son preguntas que son descartadas como infantiles. La noción completa de Ángeles y Arcángeles a veces puede ser vista como ‘linda’ pero irreal. Que desperdicio para aquellos que ignoran a los Ángeles y Arcángeles, nuestros poderosos amigos celestiales.
Jesús dice lo siguiente en Mateo 18:10 refiriéndose a los niños: “No desprecien a ninguno de estos pequeños. Pues les digo que en el cielo los ángeles de ellos están mirando siempre el rostro de mi Padre celestial”. Los Ángeles no son una creencia opcional entre los católicos. En base a las previas palabras de Jesús, así como muchas otras palabras en las Escrituras, Ángeles y Arcángeles existen. De forma particular, algunos Ángeles son asignados a seres humanos – los Ángeles Guardianes – así como Jesús lo alude en el pasaje previo en el Evangelio de Mateo. No es necesario convencer a las mamás de niños pequeños de este hecho. Ellas saben muy bien cuan a menudo sus hijos han sido protegidos de peligros sin razón aparente. Entre más pedimos su ayuda (y les agradecemos después), más van a actuar ellos en nuestra vida. Ignorémoslos y ellos van a dejar que sigamos nuestro camino. Nuestros Ángeles de la Guardianes pueden ayudar de muchas formas: en oraciones (para superar las distracciones); con el pecado (para vencer las tentaciones); con dirección (como acercarse a diferentes personas); con necesidades básicas (tareas, direcciones cuando manejamos – el mío trabaja horas extra); etc.
¿Qué son los Ángeles? ¿Quiénes son? Un Ángel es un espíritu puro con una inteligencia y poder superior a la del hombre. Los Ángeles no fueron humanos anteriormente. Ellos nunca han tenido ni tendrán nunca cuerpos. Por esta razón, ellos no pueden morir; ellos son inmortales. Los Ángeles buenos aman la humanidad. Los Ángeles malos – demonios/diablos – odian al hombre porque Dios se volvió hombre y el hombre tiene la oportunidad de ir al Cielo. A pesar de que los Ángeles no tienen cuerpos, tienen poder sobre la materia y pueden tomar forma humana como es evidenciado a través de las Escrituras.
Los Arcángeles son Ángeles con mayor poder y propósito que los Ángeles de la Guarda. Sabemos los nombres de tres Arcángeles – Gabriel, Rafael y Miguel. A Gabriel lo vemos en el Evangelio de Lucas cuando se les aparece a María y a Zacarías anunciando los nacimientos de Jesús y Juan Bautista. Rafael aparece en el libro de Tobit del Antiguo Testamento en donde él es clave en la curación de Tobit así como en el matrimonio de Tobías y Sara. St. Rafael es el santo patrón de doctores así como intercesor para encontrar esposo(a). A Miguel lo vemos en el libro de Daniel del Antiguo Testamento y en el libro de Apocalipsis del Nuevo Testamento como un General de Dios. San Miguel es el santo patrón de aquellos que hacen cumplir la ley y defienden a los inocentes, notablemente la policía y los militares.
El Papa Leo III (papa de 1878 -1903) tuvo una terrible visión del siglo 20 plagado por la influencia de Satanás. Después de la visión en 1886, él escribió la oración de San Miguel Arcángel y pidió que se rezara después de cada Misa. Fue recitada después de cada Misa hasta que se hicieron los cambios del Papa Pablo VI en 1968. En 1994 el Papa Juan Pablo II pidió que los fieles la recitaran y sugirió energéticamente que se instituyera la oración nuevamente después de la Misa. A raíz de los males que plagan nuestra sociedad hay muchas razones para invocar la intercesión de San Miguel en contra del Demonio.
