As we begin the month of May, the month of Our Lady, perhaps we can make an extra effort to honor Our Blessed Mother. Have we ever made a pilgrimage to a shrine of Our Lady? We have many within a two hour drive. Maybe we can pray five decades of the Rosary each day? Or, can we attend Mass on the Saturdays of May (in addition to Sunday)? Saturday is traditionally dedicated to Mary.
On the feast of St. Mark, April 25, the following reading is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, that every priest and consecrated pray daily. St. Irenaeus (of Lyons, France) wrote around the year 180 A.D. He was taught by St. Polycarp who was taught by St. John the Apostle. Irenaeus was only one man removed from an Apostle! It is a testament to the historical truth of Catholicism.
The Church, which has spread everywhere, even to the ends of the earth, received the faith from the Apostles and their disciples. By faith, we believe in one God, the almighty Father who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became man for our salvation. And we believe in the Holy Spirit who through the prophets foretold God’s plan: the coming of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ, his birth from the Virgin, his passion, his resurrection from the dead, his ascension into heaven, and his final coming from heaven in the glory of his Father, to recapitulate all things and to raise all men from the dead, so that, by the decree of his invisible Father, he may make a just judgment in all things and so that ‘every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth’ to Jesus Christ our Lord and our God, our Savior and the King, and ‘every tongue confess him.’
The Church spread throughout the whole world, received this preaching and this faith and now preserves it carefully, dwelling as it were in one house. Having one soul and one heart, the Church holds this faith, preaches and teaches it consistently as though by a single voice. For though there are different languages, there is but one tradition.
The faith and the tradition of the churches founded in Germany are no different from those founded among the Spanish and the Celts, in the East, in Egypt, in Libya and elsewhere in the Mediterranean world. Just as God’s creature, the sun, is one and the same the world over, so also does the Church’s preaching shine everywhere to enlighten all men who want to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Now of those who speak with authority in the churches, no preacher however forceful will utter anything different – for no one is above the Master – nor will a less forceful preacher diminish what has been handed down. Since our faith is everywhere the same, no one who can say more augments it, nor can anyone who says less diminish it.

Mientras que comenzamos el mes de Mayo, el mes de Nuestra Señora, talvez podríamos hacer un esfuerzo extra para honrar a Nuestra Madre Santísima. ¿Alguna vez hemos hecho un peregrinaje a un santuario de Nuestra Señora? Tenemos varios al menos a dos horas de distancia. ¿A lo mejor podríamos rezar cinco décadas del Rosario diariamente? O, ¿podemos asistir a Misa los sábados de mayo (además del domingo)? Tradicionalmente, el sábado está dedicado a María.
Parte de la Liturgia de las Horas que los sacerdotes y consagrados rezan diariamente, podemos leer lo siguiente el 25 de abril, fiesta de San Marcos. San Irineo (de León, Francia) escribió en el año 180 D.C. El aprendió de San Policarpo quien aprendió de San Juan Apóstol. ¡Irineo estaba solamente un hombre alejado de un Apóstol! Es un testimonio a la verdad histórica del catolicismo.
La Iglesia, la cual se ha extendido por todas partes, hasta el fin de la tierra, recibió la fe de los Apóstoles y sus discípulos. Por la fe, creemos en un Dios, el Padre todopoderoso que hizo el Cielo y la Tierra y el mar y todo lo que está en él. Creemos en un Señor Jesucristo, Hijo de Dios, que se convirtió en hombre por nuestra salvación. Y creemos en el Espíritu Santo, quien a través de los profetas predijo el plan de Dios: la venida de nuestro amado Señor Jesucristo, su nacimiento de una Virgen, su pasión, su resurrección de entre los muertos, su ascensión al Cielo, y su venida final del Cielo en la gloria de su Padre, para recapitular todas las cosas y para levantar a los hombres de entre los muertos, para que, por el decreto de su Padre invisible, él pueda hacer un juicio justo en todas las cosas para que ‘cada rodilla se doble en el cielo y en la tierra y debajo de la tierra’ en presencia de Jesucristo, Nuestro Señor y Nuestro Dios, nuestro Salvador, y el Rey, y ‘que toda lengua lo confiese’.
La Iglesia se ha extendido a través de todo el mundo, recibió esta predicación y esta fe y ahora lo preserva cuidadosamente, como en usa sola casa. Teniendo un alma y un corazón, la Iglesia mantiene su fe, la predica y enseña consistentemente como si tuviera una sola voz. Porque a pesar de tener lenguajes diferentes, no hay sino una tradición.
La fe y la tradición de las iglesias fundadas en Alemania no son diferentes de las que fueron fundadas entre los españoles y celtas. En el este, en Egipto, el Libia y en todas partes del mundo mediterráneo. Como creatura de Dios, el sol, es uno y el mismo en todo el mundo, así también la predicación de la Iglesia resplandece en todas partes para iluminar a todos los hombres que quieren llegar al conocimiento de la verdad.
Ahora, de aquellos que hablan con autoridad en las iglesias, ningún predicador, por enérgico que sea, pronunciara algo diferente – porque nadie está por encima del Maestro – ni un predicador menos enérgico disminuirá lo que se ha transmitido. Puesto que nuestra fe es la misma en todas partes, nadie que pueda decir más la aumenta, ni nadie que diga menos puede disminuirla.
