I hope your summer has begun well!
I normally include a bulletin column on modesty about this time of year as well as some thoughts for summer reading. In lieu of pastor changes in a couple weeks, perhaps just a mention of the clothing policy of St. Peter’s in Rome, the definition of modesty and a few websites that have tremendous Catholic literature new and old.
St. Peter’s in Rome attire: I have watched the ushers at St. Peter’s stop men and women from entering the Basilica because they were under dressed. What is the standard of THE Catholic church in the world? Simply put: no shoulders, no knees.
Modesty (as given in Fr. John Hardon’s Modern Catholic Dictionary): The virtue that moderates all internal and external movements of appearance of a person according to his/her endowments, possessions and station in life. Four virtues are commonly included under modesty: humility, studiousness, and two kinds of external modesty, namely in dress and general behavior. . . Humility is the ground of modesty in that it curbs the inordinate desire for personal excellence and inclines one to recognize his or her own worth in its true light. . . Modesty in dress and bodily adornments inclines a person to avoid not only whatever is offensive to others but whatever is not necessary. Modesty in bodily behavior directs a person to observe proper decorum in bodily movements, according to the dictum of St. Augustine, In all your movements let nothing be evident that would offend the eyes of another.

Others at a discount are Blood Drenched Altars (popular history of Mexico), and William Thomas Walsh’s Phillip II (popular high school history), which is discounted to $9 (usually $48).
And, I would be terribly remiss if I did not mention Tolkien!

Alrededor de esta fecha, normalmente yo incluyo en el boletín una columna acerca de la modestia así como algunas ideas de lecturas de verano. Ya que tendremos cambio de Párrocos en las próximas semanas, talvez solo menciono la política de vestimenta de San Pedro en Roma, la definición de modestia y algunos sitios web que tienen tremenda literatura Católica, nueva y antigua.
Vestimenta en San Pedro, Roma: He visto a los ujieres en San Pedro detener la entrada a la Basílica a hombres y mujeres porque no estaban vestidos apropiadamente. ¿Cuál es la norma de LA Iglesia Católica en el mundo? Puesto simplemente: No se deben ver los hombros ni las rodillas.
Modestia (como fue dada en el diccionario del Padre John Hardon, Diccionario Católico Moderno): La virtud que modera todos los movimientos internos y externos de la apariencia de la persona de acuerdo a sus dotes, posesiones y estado de vida. Comúnmente se incluyen cuatro virtudes bajo la modestia: humildad, diligencia y dos clases de modestia externa, concretamente en el vestir y comportamiento en general… Humildad es el fundamento de la modestia ya que frena el deseo desordenado por la excelencia personal y hace que uno se incline a reconocer su propio valor por lo que es… Modestia al vestir y en los adornos corporales inclina a la persona no solo a evitar lo que es ofensivo para otros sino todo lo que no es necesario. Modestia en el comportamiento del cuerpo dirige a la persona a observar decoro propio en los movimientos corporales, de acuerdo al dictum de San Agustín, En todos los movimientos, no permitan que sea evidente nada que ofenda los ojos de otros.
