On Monday, June 29th the Church universally celebrates the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (d. 64-67). This is a holyday of obligation in some countries. Veneration of the two great Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is built, the origin of her faith and will forever remain her protectors and her guides. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God’s providential guidance that they were led to make the capital of the Empire, sanctified by their martyrdom, the center of the Christian world whence should radiate the preaching of the Gospel.
St. Peter suffered martyrdom under Nero, in A.D. 66 or 67. He was buried on the hill of the Vatican where recent excavations have revealed his tomb on the very site of the Basilica of St. Peter’s. St. Paul was beheaded in the Via Ostia on the spot where now stands the basilica bearing his name. Down the centuries Christian people in their thousands have gone on pilgrimage to the tombs of these Apostles. In the second and third centuries the Roman Church already stood pre-eminent by reason of her apostolicity, the infallible truth of her teaching and her two great figures, Sts. Peter and Paul.
A partial indulgence may be gained today by anyone who makes devout use of a religious article blessed by any priest but “if the article of devotion has been blessed by the Sovereign Pontiff or by any Bishop, the faithful, using it, can also gain a plenary indulgence, provided they also make a profession of faith (e.g. the Apostles Creed), as long as the usual conditions are satisfied.
The collect Prayer from the Vigil of this Solemnity: Grant, we pray, O Lord our God, that we may be sustained by the intercession of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, that, as through them you gave your Church the foundations of her heavenly office, so through them you may help her to eternal salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Hoy la Iglesia celebra universalmente la Solemnidad de los Santos Pedro y Pablo, Apóstoles († 64-67). En algunos países, esta solemnidad es día de precepto. La veneración de los dos grandes Apóstoles, San Pedro y San Pablo, tiene sus raíces en los mismos fundamentos de la Iglesia. Ellos son la roca firme sobre la que está edificada la Iglesia, el origen de su fe, y permanecerán para siempre como sus protectores y guías. A ellos debe Roma su verdadera grandeza, pues fue bajo la providente guía de Dios que fueron conducidos a hacer de la capital del Imperio, santificada por su martirio, el centro del mundo cristiano, desde donde habría de irradiarse la predicación del Evangelio.
San Pedro sufrió el martirio bajo el emperador Nerón hacia los años 66 o 67 d.C. Fue sepultado en la colina Vaticana, donde recientes excavaciones han revelado su tumba precisamente en el lugar donde hoy se alza la Basílica de San Pedro. San Pablo fue decapitado en la Vía Ostiense, en el sitio donde actualmente se encuentra la basílica que lleva su nombre. A lo largo de los siglos, miles de cristianos han peregrinado a las tumbas de estos Apóstoles. Ya en los siglos II y III, la Iglesia de Roma ocupaba un lugar preeminente debido a su origen apostólico, a la verdad infalible de su enseñanza y a sus dos grandes figuras: los Santos Pedro y Pablo.
Hoy puede ganarse una indulgencia parcial mediante el uso devoto de un objeto religioso bendecido por cualquier sacerdote. Además, si dicho objeto de devoción ha sido bendecido por el Sumo Pontífice o por un Obispo, los fieles pueden obtener también una indulgencia plenaria al utilizarlo, siempre que hagan una profesión de fe (por ejemplo, el Credo de los Apóstoles) y se cumplan las condiciones habituales requeridas.
ORACIÓN COLECTA DE LA VIGILIA DE ESTA SOLEMNIDAD: Concédenos, te rogamos, Señor Dios nuestro, ser sostenidos por la intercesión de los bienaventurados Apóstoles Pedro y Pablo, para que, así como por ellos diste a tu Iglesia los fundamentos de su misión celestial, así también, por su intercesión, la conduzcas a la salvación eterna. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tu Hijo, que vive y reina contigo en la unidad del Espíritu Santo y es Dios, por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
