On Monday, July 6th Holy Mother Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Maria Goretti. She was born of a poor family in Corinaldi, Italy, in 1890. Near Nettuno she spent a difficult childhood assisting her mother in domestic duties. She was of a pious nature and often at prayer. In 1902 she was stabbed to death, preferring to die rather than be raped. (Office of Readings)
“It is well known how this young girl had to face a bitter struggle with no way to defend herself. Without warning a vicious stranger (actually Alessandro Serenelli who lived with his father in the same house as the Goretti’s.) burst upon her, bent on raping her and destroying her childlike purity. In that moment of crisis she could have spoken to her Redeemer in the words of that classic, The Imitation of Christ: “Though tested and plagued by a host of misfortunes, I have no fear so long as your grace is with me. It is my strength, stronger than any adversary; it helps me and gives me guidance.” With splendid courage she surrendered herself to God and his grace and so gave her life to protect her virginity.
“The life of this simple girl—I shall concern myself only with highlights—we can see as worthy of heaven. Even today people can look upon it with admiration and respect. Parents can learn from her story how to raise their God-given children in virtue, courage and holiness; they can learn to train them in the Catholic faith so that, when put to the test, God’s grace will support them and they will come through undefeated, unscathed and untarnished.
“From Maria’s story carefree children and young people with their zest for life can learn not to be led astray by attractive pleasures which are not only ephemeral and empty but also sinful. Instead they can fix their sights on achieving Christian moral perfection, however difficult and hazardous that course may prove. With determination and God’s help all of us can attain that goal by persistent effort and prayer.
“Not all of us are expected to die a martyr’s death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. This demands strength of character though it may not match that of this innocent girl. Still, a constant, persistent and relentless effort is asked of us right up to the moment of our death. This may be conceived as a slow steady martyrdom which Christ urged upon us when he said: The kingdom of heaven is set upon and laid waste by violent forces.
“So let us all, with God’s grace, strive to reach the goal that the example of the virgin martyr, Saint Maria Goretti, sets before us. Through her prayers to the Redeemer may all of us, each in his own way, joyfully try to follow the inspiring example of Maria Goretti who now enjoys eternal happiness in heaven.”

Maria appeared to her murderer in his prison cell to forgive him, and he was subsequently converted. He sat next to her mother at the beatification, who also forgave him.

El lunes 6 de julio, la Santa Madre Iglesia celebra la memoria de Santa María Goretti. Santa María Goretti nació en una familia pobre en Corinaldo, Italia, en 1890. Cerca de Nettuno pasó una infancia difícil, ayudando a su madre en las labores del hogar. Era una niña profundamente piadosa y dedicada a la oración. “Es bien sabido cómo esta joven tuvo que enfrentarse a una amarga lucha sin posibilidad alguna de defenderse. De repente, un hombre perverso (Alessandro Serenelli, quien vivía con su padre en la misma casa que la familia Goretti) irrumpió con la intención de violarla y destruir su inocencia. En aquel momento de prueba, María pudo haber dirigido a su Redentor las palabras del clásico La Imitación de Cristo: ‘Aunque me vea probado y rodeado de innumerables desgracias, no temeré mientras tu gracia esté conmigo. Ella es mi fortaleza, más poderosa que cualquier enemigo; me ayuda y me guía.’ Con admirable valentía, María se entregó por completo a Dios y a su gracia, ofreciendo su vida para conservar su virginidad.
La vida de esta sencilla muchacha, aunque solo consideremos algunos de sus rasgos principales, es verdaderamente digna del cielo. Aún hoy inspira admiración y respeto. Los padres pueden aprender de su ejemplo cómo educar a sus hijos en la virtud, el valor y la santidad; cómo formarlos en la fe católica para que, cuando lleguen las pruebas, la gracia de Dios los sostenga y puedan salir victoriosos, sin mancha y sin haber cedido al pecado.
Los niños y jóvenes también pueden aprender de María Goretti a no dejarse seducir por placeres pasajeros y vacíos que conducen al pecado. En cambio, deben fijar su mirada en la búsqueda de la perfección moral cristiana, por difícil que pueda parecer ese camino. Con decisión, oración y la ayuda de Dios, todos podemos alcanzar esa meta.
No todos estamos llamados a morir como mártires, pero sí estamos llamados a vivir la virtud cristiana. Esto exige fortaleza de espíritu, aunque no alcance el heroísmo de esta inocente joven. Se nos pide una lucha constante y perseverante hasta el final de nuestra vida, un martirio silencioso y cotidiano, como enseñó Cristo cuando dijo que el Reino de los Cielos exige esfuerzo y valentía.
Esforcémonos, pues, con la gracia de Dios, por alcanzar el ideal de santidad que nos propone el ejemplo de la virgen y mártir Santa María Goretti. Que, por su intercesión ante el Redentor, todos procuremos seguir con alegría su ejemplo, para compartir un día con ella la felicidad eterna del cielo.”

María se apareció a su asesino mientras este estaba en prisión para ofrecerle su perdón. Gracias a este gesto de misericordia, Alessandro Serenelli se convirtió profundamente. Años después, asistió a la beatificación de Santa María Goretti sentado junto a la madre de la santa, quien también lo había perdonado.
