How are those New Years’ Resolutions going? Of course, prudence is always necessary when making resolutions – what can I realistically and humbly attain? The key word is ‘humble’
Last weekend, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died – December 31st to be exact. Perhaps, it would be good to share a few of his (many) poignant quotes.
- We have come to believe in God’s love: in these words the Christian can express the fundamental decision of his life. Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.
- Too often, though, the beauty that is thrust upon us is illusory and deceitful, superficial and blinding, leaving the onlooker dazed; instead of bringing him our of himself and opening him up to horizons of true freedom as it draws him aloft, it imprisons him within himself and further enslaves him, depriving him of hope and joy. It is a seductive but hypocritical beauty that rekindles desire, the will to power, to possess, and to dominate others, it is a beauty which soon turns into its opposite, taking on the guise of indecency, transgression or gratuitous provocation. Authentic beauty, however, unlocks the yearning of the human heart, the profound desire to know, to love, to go towards the Other, to reach for the Beyond.
- A new generation of Christians is being called to help build a world in which God’s gift of life is welcomed, respected and cherished-not rejected, feared as a threat and destroyed. A new age in which love is not greedy or self-seeking, but pure, faithful and genuinely free, open to others, respectful of their dignity, seeking their good, radiating joy and beauty – a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption that deaden our souls and poison our relationships.
- As the trend in the ballots slowly made me realize that — in a manner of speaking the guillotine would fall on me — I started to feel quite dizzy. I thought that I had done my life’s work and could now hope to live out my days in peace. I told the Lord with deep conviction, ‘Don’t do this to me. You have younger and better (candidates) who could take up this great task with a totally different energy and with different strength.’ Evidently, this time he didn’t listen to me.

¿Cómo van esas resoluciones de Año Nuevo? Por supuesto, prudencia es siempre necesaria cuando se hacen esas resoluciones – ¿qué puedo lograr realística y humildemente? La palabra clave es ‘humilde’.
El fin de semana pasado, el Papa Emérito Benedicto XVI murió – el 31 de diciembre para ser exacto. A lo mejor sería bueno compartir algunas de sus (muchas) citas relevantes.
- Hemos llegado a creer en el amor de Dios: con estas palabras el cristiano puede expresar la decisión fundamental de su vida. Ser cristiano no es el resultado de una elección ética o una idea elevada, sino el encuentro con un evento, una persona, que le da vida a un nuevo horizonte y a una dirección decisiva.
- Muy a menudo, sin embargo, la belleza que se nos impone es ilusoria y engañosa, superficial y cegadora, dejando al espectador aturdido; el lugar de llevarlo fuera de sí mismo y abriéndolo a nuevos horizontes de verdadera Libertad a medida que lo eleva, lo aprisiona dentro de sí mismo y lo esclaviza aún más, privándolo de esperanza y alegría. Es una belleza seductiva pero hipócrita que reaviva el deseo, la voluntad de poder, de poseer, y de dominar a los demás, es una belleza que pronto se convierte en su opuesto, tomando el disfraz de indecencia, transgresión o provocación gratuita. La belleza autentica, sin embargo, abre el anhelo de corazón humano, el profundo deseo de conocer, de amar, de ir hacia el Otro, para alcanzar el Más Allá.
- Una nueva generación de cristianos está llamada a ayudar a construir un mundo en el cual el don de la vida de Dios es bienvenido, respetado y apreciado – no rechazado, o temido como una amenaza y destruido. Una nueva era en la que el amor no es egoísta, sino puro, fiel y genuinamente libre, abierto a los demás, respetuoso de su dignidad, buscando su bien, irradiando alegría y belleza – una nueva era en la cual la esperanza nos libera de la superficialidad, la apatía y el ensimismamiento que mitiga nuestras almas y envenenan nuestras relaciones.
- A medida que la tendencia de las boletas me hace darme cuenta lentamente que – por así decirlo, la guillotina me caería encima – comencé a sentirme un poco mareado. Yo pensé que ya había terminado con el trabajo de mi vida y podía ahora esperar vivir mis días en paz. Yo le dije al Señor, con profunda convicción, ‘No me hagas esto. Tú tienes mejores (candidatos) y más jóvenes quienes podrían asumir esta tarea con una total y diferente energía y con diferente fuerza’. Evidentemente, esta vez Él no me escucho.
