How many legions does the Pope have?
Such are the words of Josef Stalin, perhaps the most inhumane communist dictator of the Soviet Union. The words are quite ironic as Stalin is in his grave and the Catholic Church continues. There have been many before him and, now, after him who have made similar statements.
Why bring up such a topic this weekend? This weekend is Pentecost Sunday when we celebrate the Coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles (and Our Lady) fifty days after Easter and ten days after the Ascension. Jesus had promised the Apostles He would send ‘the Spirit of Truth’. Pentecost is considered the ‘Birthday of the Church’ as the Apostles are given strength and wisdom to proclaim Our Lord’s truths to the world. After Pentecost, the Apostles convert thousands.
We often speak of two particular gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Church: infallibility and indefectibility.
Infallibility is the truth that a pope (as well as all the bishops in union with the Pope at a Council of the Church) are protected from teaching in error on matters of faith and morals publicly, to the whole Church, ending all discussion (cf. Matthew 16: 18-20).
Indefectibility is the truth that the Catholic Church will exist until the end of time (cf. Matthew 16: 18-20).
God is all-powerful. He established the Catholic Church as the Mystical Bride of Christ. He will not allow It ever to be destroyed from within or from without.
At times in history the Catholic Church has been persecuted and many people have suffered. Yes, look at the 20th century! It may seem that the Church has all but been destroyed in a country by totalitarians. Totalitarians always die. The Church never dies.
The Holy Spirit is always active in hearts, often unseen. How many children of pagan warlords, kings and emperors have become Catholic?! How many countries have returned to the Faith of Jesus Christ after decades of persecution? After the blot on history of communism in Europe and Asia (we still are dealing with), how many former atheistic communist countries have seen a blossoming of Catholicism! In countries where godless persons attempt to control and seize power, they will never be able to destroy the Catholic Church.
The question for us on this Pentecost Sunday is whether we will remain faithful to Jesus’ Mystical Bride, the Catholic Church – faithful in what I believe and faithful in how I live. For, Jesus and His Bride are One.

Tales son las palabras de Josef Stalin, quizás el dictador comunista más inhumano de la Unión Soviética. Resultan bastante irónicas, ya que Stalin se encuentra en la tumba y la Iglesia Católica sigue existiendo. Muchos, antes y después de él, han hecho declaraciones similares.
¿Por qué abordar este tema este fin de semana? Este fin de semana es el Domingo de Pentecostés, cuando celebramos la Venida del Espíritu Santo sobre los Apóstoles (y Nuestra Señora) cincuenta días después de Pascua y diez días después de la Ascensión. Jesús prometió a los Apóstoles que enviaría el Espíritu de la Verdad. Pentecostés se considera el nacimiento de la Iglesia, ya que los Apóstoles reciben fuerza y sabiduría para proclamar las verdades de Nuestro Señor al mundo. Después de Pentecostés, los Apóstoles convierten a miles.
A menudo hablamos de dos dones particulares del Espíritu Santo a la Iglesia: la infalibilidad y la indefectibilidad.
La infalibilidad es la verdad según la cual un papa (así como todos los obispos en unión con él en un Concilio de la Iglesia) están protegidos de enseñar erróneamente sobre asuntos de fe y moral públicamente, ante toda la Iglesia, poniendo fin a toda discusión (cf. Mateo 16:18-20).
La indefectibilidad es la verdad según la cual la Iglesia Católica existirá hasta el fin de los tiempos (cf. Mateo 16:18-20).
Dios es todopoderoso. Estableció la Iglesia Católica como la Esposa Mística de Cristo. No permitirá que sea destruida jamás, ni desde dentro ni desde fuera.
En ocasiones de la historia, la Iglesia Católica ha sido perseguida y mucha gente ha sufrido. ¡Sí, miren el siglo XX! Puede parecer que la Iglesia ha sido prácticamente destruida en un país por los totalitarios. Los totalitarios siempre mueren. La Iglesia nunca muere.
El Espíritu Santo siempre está activo en los corazones, a menudo invisible. ¿Cuántos hijos de caudillos, reyes y emperadores paganos se han convertido al catolicismo? ¿Cuántos países han regresado a la fe de Jesucristo tras décadas de persecución? Tras la mancha histórica del comunismo en Europa y Asia (que aún seguimos lidiando), ¡cuántos antiguos países comunistas ateos han visto florecer el catolicismo! En países donde personas impías intentan controlar y tomar el poder, jamás podrán destruir la Iglesia Católica. La pregunta para nosotros en este Domingo de Pentecostés es si permaneceremos fieles a la Esposa Mística de Jesús, la Iglesia Católica: fieles en lo que creo y fieles en mi forma de vivir. Porque Jesús y su Esposa son uno.
