As our diocese will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024, Bishop Burbidge has asked us to spend three years in preparation for the anniversary. The first year of preparation, last year, was dedicated to the Holy Eucharist. The second year of preparation began on the feast of Christ, the King, November 20, 2022. The theme for this year of preparation is Our Lady, particularly her words, ‘My soul rejoices in the Lord.’ These are the first words of Blessed Mother’s Magnificat prayer that she prays at her Visitation to her cousin, Elizabeth.
Our Lady’s Magnificat can be a very good meditation throughout Advent as we prepare for the Birth of Her Son. Our Lady was pregnant only a week or two when she visited Elizabeth. St. Luke recounts Elizabeth’s words after Our Lady’s greeting: Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.
Mary immediately responds with her Magnificat. It is an incredible prayer wherein we have a glimpse of Our Lady’s soul. She does not prepare this prayer. It comes from the depths of a soul completely united with Almighty God. As Mary had entered into her own Advent of nine months, perhaps we can ponder this Canticle of Mary each day this Advent. How can we make Our Lady’s words our own?
My soul magnifies (rejoices) the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold, all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm; He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

Mientras que nuestra diócesis celebra su 50 aniversario, el Obispo Burbidge nos ha pedido que pasemos tres años en preparación para el aniversario. El primer año de preparación, el año pasado, fue dedicado a la Sagrada Eucaristía. El segundo año de preparación comenzó con la fiesta de Cristo Rey, el 20 de noviembre del 2022. El tema para este año de preparación es Nuestra Señora, particularmente sus palabras, ‘Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Señor’. Estas son las primeras palabras de la oración Magníficat que la Santísima Madre reza en la Visitación a su prima Isabel.
La Magníficat de Nuestra Señora puede ser una muy buena meditación durante el Adviento mientras nos preparamos para el Nacimiento de Su Hijo. Nuestra Señora está embarazada, tiene una o dos semanas de embarazo cuando visitó a Isabel. San Lucas cuenta las palabras de Isabel después del saludo de Nuestra Señora: ¡Bendita tu entre todas las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! ¿Y cómo es que la madre de mi Señor viene a mí? Porque al momento que tu saludo llego a mis oídos, el niño en mi vientre saltó de alegría. Feliz la que ha creído que se cumplirían las cosas que le fueron dichas de parte del Señor.
Inmediatamente María responde con su Magníficat. Es una oración increíble que nos deja ver un poquito del alma de Nuestra Señora. Ella no prepara esta oración. Viene de lo más profundo de un alma completamente unida a Dios Todopoderoso. Ya que María había entrado en su propio Adviento de nueve meses, tal vez podemos meditar en este Cántico de María cada día de Adviento. ¿Cómo podemos hacer nuestras las palabras de Nuestra Señora?
Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Señor, se alegra mi espíritu en Dios mi Salvador, porque ha mirado la humillación de su esclava; desde ahora me felicitaran todas las generaciones, porque el Poderoso ha hecho obras grandes por mi: su nombre es santo, y su misericordia llega a sus fieles de generación en generación. Él ha hecho proezas con su brazo: dispersa a los soberbios de corazón, derriba del trono a los poderosos y enaltece a los humildes, a los hambrientos los colma de bienes, y a los ricos despide vacíos. Auxilia a Israel, su siervo, acordándose de la misericordia – como lo había prometido a nuestros padres – en favor de Abraham y su descendencia por siempre.
