May 18th is a day we should not overlook. May 18, 1920 Karol Wojtyla was born in Poland! He would later become pope and Saint John Paul II. Have you ever considered his life?
Karol Wojtyla’s life was surrounded with suffering – yet he we ever hopeful and joyful. His younger sister died soon after childbirth. His mother died when he was eight years old. His older brother, whom he adored, died a few years after his mother. His father died when he was twenty years old. At the age of 20, he was alone in the world.
He endured the dictatorship and cruelty of the Nazis and Communists. Since he was raised in a town that was 40% Jewish, he watched many of his friends die during the Nazi occupation. He, himself, helped Jews hide and escape from the Nazis. The Nazis never managed to arrest him.
Despite his suffering, the young Wojtyla flourished in his faith. His prayer life grew. He was to enter the underground seminary during World War II and be ordained in secret in 1946. He would be a bishop in twelve short years. Twenty years later he would be the first non-Italian Pope in 500 years. He would be Pope from 1978-2005.
Karol Wojtyla was completely devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary as his spiritual mother. He also would spend hours before the Holy Eucharist in his daily prayer life throughout his priesthood and papacy.
In addition to being a playwright, Pope John Paul II wrote extensively in philosophy – his own philosophy: existential personalism; and theology – his own theology: Theology of the Body. There is so much of his work to consider. Perhaps, there are a few of his writings of particular significance:
- The Role of the Family in the Modern World (Familiaris Consortio).
- The Dignity of Woman (Mulieris Dignitatem).
- The Splendor of Truth (Veritatis Splendor) – on truth.
- The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae) – on the moral life.
- On Redemptive Suffering (Salvifici Doloris)

La vida de Carol Wojtyla estuvo rodeada de sufrimiento – aun así, siempre fue optimista y feliz. Su hermana menor murió poco después de nacer. Su mamá murió cuando él tenía ocho años. Su hermano mayor, a quien él adoraba, murió pocos años después que su madre. Su papá murió cuando él tenía veinte años. A la edad de 20 años, él estaba solo en el mundo.
Él sobrevivió la dictadura y crueldad de los comunistas Nazis. Como había sido criado en un pueblo que era 40% judío, vio a muchos de sus amigos morir durante la ocupación nazi. Él mismo ayudó a judíos a esconderse y escapar de los Nazis. Los Nazis nunca pudieron arrestarlo.
A pesar de su sufrimiento, el joven Wojtyla floreció en su fe. Su vida de oración creció. Él entraría a un seminario clandestino durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y fue ordenado sacerdote en 1946. Apenas doce años después sería Obispo. Veinte años después sería el primer Papa no italiano en 500 años. Él sería Papa de 1978-2005.
Carol Wojtyla era completamente devoto a la Santísima Virgen María como su mamá espiritual. Durante su sacerdocio y papado el pasaba horas delante de la Santísima Eucaristía haciendo sus oraciones diaria.
Además de ser dramaturgo, el Papa Juan Pablo II escribió extensivamente sobre filosofía – su propia filosofía: personalismo existencial; y teología – su propia teología: Teología del Cuerpo. Hay tanto por contemplar de su trabajo. A lo mejor, hay algunos de sus escritos con particular significado:
