Gospel Excerpt, John 3:13-17: Jesus said to Nicodemus: “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was observed in Rome before the end of the seventh century. It commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which had been placed on Mount Calvary by St. Helena and preserved in Jerusalem, but then had fallen into the hands of Chosroas, King of the Persians. The precious relic was recovered and returned to Jerusalem by Emperor Heralius in 629.
This day is also called the Triumph of the Cross, Elevation of the Cross, Holy Cross Day, Holy Rood Day, or Roodmas. The liturgy of the Cross is a triumphant liturgy. When Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people, it was a foreshadowing of the salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross. Our Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ we must take up His cross, follow Him and become obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross. We identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.
We made the Sign of the Cross before prayer which helps to fix our minds and hearts to God. After prayer we make the Sign of the Cross to keep close to God. During trials and temptations our strength and protection is the Sign of the Cross. At Baptism we are sealed with the Sign of the Cross, signifying the fullness of redemption and that we belong to Christ. Let us look to the cross frequently, and realize that when we make the Sign of the Cross we give our entire self to God — mind, soul, heart, body, will, thoughts.
O cross, you are the glorious sign of victory. Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.
Fragmento del Evangelio, Juan 3:13-17: Jesús dijo a Nicodemo: “Nadie ha subido al cielo sino aquel que descendió del cielo, el Hijo del hombre. Y como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así también es necesario que el Hijo del hombre sea levantado, para que todo el que cree en él tenga vida eterna”.
Porque Dios amó tanto al mundo que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo el que crea en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna. Porque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por medio de él.
La Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz se celebraba en Roma antes de finales del siglo VII. Conmemora la recuperación de la Santa Cruz, que había sido colocada en el monte Calvario por Santa Elena y guardada en Jerusalén, pero que luego cayó en manos de Cosroes, rey de Persia. El emperador Heraclio recuperó la preciosa reliquia y la devolvió a Jerusalén en el año 629.
Este día también se conoce como el Triunfo de la Cruz, Elevación de la Cruz, Día de la Santa Cruz o Día de la Santa Cruz. La liturgia de la Cruz es una liturgia triunfal. Cuando Moisés levantó la serpiente de bronce, fue un preámbulo de la salvación a través de Jesús, quien fue levantado en la Cruz. Nuestra Iglesia Madre canta el triunfo de la Cruz, el instrumento de nuestra redención. Para seguir a Cristo, debemos llevar su cruz, seguirlo y serle obedientes hasta la muerte, incluso si eso significa morir en la cruz. En las pruebas y tentaciones, el signo de la cruz es nuestra fortaleza y protección. En el bautismo somos sellados con el signo de la cruz, lo que significa la plenitud de la redención y que pertenecemos a Cristo. Mirémos a la cruz con frecuencia y recordemos que cuando hacemos el signo de la cruz, entregamos a Dios todo nuestro ser: mente, alma, corazón, cuerpo, voluntad y pensamientos.
¡Oh cruz, eres el glorioso signo de la victoria! Por tu poder, que podamos participar en el triunfo de Jesucristo.
