Easter Sunday, 2012 Pope Benedict began his blessing of the City and the World by quoting St. Augustine, “‘Resurrectio Domini spes nostra – the Lord’s resurrection is our hope.’ With these words, the great Bishop explained to the faithful that Jesus rose again so that we, though destined to die, should not despair, worrying that with death life is completely finished; Christ is risen to give us hope.”
Pope Benedict continued, “. . . death is not the last word, because Life will be victorious at the end. This certainty of ours is based not on simple human reasoning, but on a historical fact of faith: Jesus Christ, crucified and buried, is risen with his glorified body. Jesus is risen so that we too, believing in him, may have eternal life. This proclamation is at the heart of the Gospel message.”
In a secular world that seems ever more intent on going over the cliff of despair, the Truth of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection is the antidote. Jesus states, “I am the Way, and the Truth and the Life” (Jn 14:6). If Jesus is life, what is existence without Him? It is not life. It ends in despair, hopelessness. Life lived in union with Jesus is one with a desire for Him and trust in Him. Though we may fail at times, Peter comes to mind, Jesus is the merciful Savior Who wishes to bestow His Mercy upon us.
How often does Our Lord raise us from the dead? How often does He remove our sins in Confession and give us His Life in our souls? How often does He give us hope?
“I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10).
May our faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ lead us to a deeper hope in Him.
Domingo de Pascua, 2012, el Papa Benedicto comenzó su bendición de la ciudad y del mundo citando a San Agustín, “‘Resurrectio Domini spes nostra – la resurrección de Nuestro Señor es nuestra esperanza’. Con estas palabras, el gran Obispo explicó a los fieles que Jesús se levantó otra vez para que nosotros, a pesar de estar destinados a morir, no tengamos desesperanza, preocupándonos de que con la muerte, la vida está completamente terminada; Cristo resucitó para darnos esperanza”.
El Papa Benedicto continuó, “. . . la muerte no es la última palabra, porque la Vida será victoriosa al final. Esta certeza nuestra está basada no en un simple razonamiento humano, sino en un histórico hecho de fe: Jesucristo, crucificado y enterrado, se levantó con su cuerpo glorificado. Jesús resucitó para que nosotros también, creyendo en él, tengamos vida eterna. Esta proclamación está al centro del mensaje del Evangelio”.
En un mundo seglar, en donde más que nunca parece estar yendo al precipicio de la desesperanza, la Verdad de la Resurrección de Jesucristo es el antídoto. Jesús declara, “Yo son el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida” (Juan 14:6). Si Jesús es vida, ¿qué es la existencia sin Él? No es vida. Termina en desesperación, desesperanza. Una vida vivida en unión con Jesús, es una con deseo de Él y confianza en Él. A pesar de que a veces fallamos, Pedro viene a la mente, Jesús es el Salvador misericordioso Quien desea derramar su Misericordia sobre nosotros.
¿Cuántas veces Nuestro Señor nos levanta de entre los muertos? ¿Cuán a menudo Él remueve nuestros pecados en Confesión y nos da Su Vida en nuestras almas? ¿Cuán a menudo Él nos da esperanza?
“Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia” (Juan 10:10).
Ojalá que nuestra fe en la Resurrección de Jesucristo nos lleve a una profunda esperanza en Él.
