Today is a tremendous feast in the Church, Corpus Christi, or The Body and Blood of Christ! It causes us to reflect on the awesome gift of Jesus really, truly and substantially present in the Holy Eucharist.
It is good to be reminded that the Catholic Church has always taught that Jesus is really present in the Holy Eucharist. In fact, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist was not formally questioned until the early 1520s by Martin Luther and fellow Protestant leaders!
The feast of Corpus Christi was established in 1264 by Pope Urban IV. He established the feast after a miraculous event involving a very young priest. Outside the town of Orvieto, Italy (north of Rome), a Fr. Peter had temptations against belief in the Real Presence. During Mass he implored Our Lord to give him a deeper faith, even to show him Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist. As Fr. Peter held up the Host at the Consecration of the Mass, the Host began to bleed. The drops of blood fell onto the white cloth upon which Mass is said. Jesus had indeed heard Fr. Peter’s prayer!
As it turned out, the Pope was in the nearby town of Orvieto. When he learned of the miracle, the Pope left the town and found Fr. Peter carrying the Blood-soaked cloth to Orvieto to show him. The Pope fell upon his knees before the miracle. They returned to Orvieto whence Pope Urban announced the feast of Corpus Christi. The townspeople soon began the practice of carrying the Eucharistic Miracle throughout the town. The Eucharistic Procession of Corpus Christi has occurred in Orvieto every year since 1264. It has spread throughout the globe! How many Catholics from various parts of the world have grown up with yearly Eucharistic Processions!
Our Eucharistic Procession today at 6:30pm is a public profession of faith in Jesus’ Real Presence – if the Host isn’t Jesus, then it is a little crazy to process around with a piece of bread! Eucharistic processions remind us of our calling from Jesus to take Him into the world. Literally, we take Him into the world in our procession today. However, we are called to take Our Lord into the world every day by our example and word (one of the dismissals at the end of Mass is “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”)

Hoy es una gran fiesta en la Iglesia, ¡Corpus Christi, o el Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo! Nos causa reflexionar en el increíble regalo que es Jesús, verdadera y sustancialmente presente en la Santa Eucaristía.
Es bueno que se nos recuerde que la Iglesia Católica siempre ha enseñado que Jesús está realmente presente en la Santa Eucaristía. De hecho, la Real Presencia de Jesús en la Santa Eucaristía no se había puesto en duda formalmente sino hasta principios de los años 1520 ¡cuando lo puso en duda Martín Lutero y sus compañeros lideres protestantes!
La fiesta de Corpus Christi fue establecida en 1264 por el Papa Urbano IV. Él estableció la fiesta después de un evento milagroso involucrando a un sacerdote sumamente joven. En las afueras del pueblo de Orvieto, Italia (al norte de Roma), un padre Pedro tuvo tentaciones en contra de la creencia en la Real Presencia. Durante la Misa él le imploró a Nuestro Señor que le diera una fé tan profunda hasta mostrarle la Real Presencia de Jesús en la Eucaristía. Mientras el Padre Pedro sostenía la Hostia durante la Consagración de la Misa, la Hostia comenzó a sangrar. Las gotas de sangre cayeron en el paño blanco sobre el que se celebra la Misa. Jesús, ¡había escuchado la oración del Padre Pedro!
Resulta que el Papa estaba en el pueblo cercano a Orvieto. Cuando supo del milagro, el Papa dejo el pueblo y encontró al Padre Pedro llevando el paño bañado en Sangre desde Orvieto para mostrárselo. El Papa cayó de rodillas ante el milagro. Juntos regresaron a Orvieto en donde el Papa Urbano anunció la fiesta de Corpus Christi. La gente del pueblo pronto comenzó la práctica de llevar el Milagro Eucarístico alrededor del pueblo. La Procesión Eucarística de Corpus Christi ha ocurrido en Orvieto cada año desde 1264. ¡Se ha extendido a todo el mundo! ¡Cuántos católicos de varias partes del mundo han crecido con Procesiones Eucarísticas anuales!
Nuestra Procesión Eucarística de hoy a las at 6:30pm es una profesión pública de fé en la Real Presencia de Jesús – si la Hostia no es Jesús, ¡entonces es un poco loco hacer una procesión con un pedazo de pan! Las procesiones Eucarísticas nos recuerdan el llamado de Jesús a que lo llevemos al mundo. Hoy, literalmente lo llevamos al mundo. Sin embargo, estamos llamados a llevar a Nuestro Señor al mundo todos los días, con nuestro ejemplo y nuestras palabras (una de las despedidas de la Misa es “Vayan y anuncien el Evangelio del Señor.”).
Jesús mío, yo creo, adoro, espero y te amo. Te pido perdón por todos lo que no creen, no te adoran, no te esperan y no te aman.
Jesús mío, deseo recibirte con la pureza y devoción con la que tu Santísima Madre te recibió; ¡con el espíritu y fervor de los santos!
