From the Gospel of the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Year A: Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, He will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” (John 11: 21-27)
‘Out of the depths I call to you O Lord: Lord hear my cry. Listen attentively to the sound of my pleading!’ (Ps 129:1-2).
In this, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to turn our attention to the realities that are perhaps the most ‘scandalous’ in human experience, the death of a loved one. In this Gospel we see all those who are being supportive of Martha and Mary at the moment of their brother, Lazarus’ death.
Previously called “Passion Sunday,” this Fifth Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of Passiontide, a deeper time of Lent. This is the third Sunday of the scrutinies for the preparation of adult converts, and the final Sunday of Lent before the beginning of Holy Week. The Liturgy of the Word of this day speaks of re-creation, resurrection, and new life.
Today the option of covering of sacred images is practiced. The rubrics in The Third Edition of the Roman Missal states:
In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from this Sunday may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil (Fifth Sunday of Lent, p. 256).
Del Evangelio del Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, Ciclo A: Marta dijo a Jesús: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. Pero incluso ahora sé que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Él te lo concederá». Jesús le dijo: «Tu hermano resucitará». Marta le respondió: «Sé que resucitará en la resurrección del último día». Jesús le dijo: «Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá; y todo el que vive y cree en mí no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?». Ella le contestó: «Sí, Señor. He llegado a creer que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que ha de venir al mundo». (Juan 11: 21-27)
“Desde lo hondo a ti grito, Señor: Señor, escucha mi clamor. ¡Presta oído atento al sonido de mi súplica!” (Sal 129:1-2).
En este, el Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos invita a dirigir nuestra atención hacia aquellas realidades que son, tal vez, las más «escandalosas» de la experiencia humana: la muerte de un ser querido. En este Evangelio vemos a todos aquellos que brindan su apoyo a Marta y a María en el momento de la muerte de su hermano, Lázaro.
Anteriormente llamado “Domingo de Pasión”, este Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma marca el comienzo del Tiempo de Pasión, una etapa más profunda de la Cuaresma. Este es el tercer domingo de los escrutinios para la preparación de los conversos adultos, y el último domingo de Cuaresma antes del inicio de la Semana Santa. La Liturgia de la Palabra de este día nos habla de recreación, resurrección y vida nueva.
Hoy se observa la práctica de cubrir las imágenes sagradas. Las rúbricas de la *Tercera Edición del Misal Romano* establecen lo siguiente:
En las diócesis de los Estados Unidos, se puede observar la práctica de cubrir las cruces y las imágenes en toda la iglesia a partir de este domingo. Las cruces permanecen cubiertas hasta el final de la Celebración de la Pasión del Señor el Viernes Santo; las imágenes, en cambio, permanecen cubiertas hasta el comienzo de la Vigilia Pascual (Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, p. 256).
