Today we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Our Parish Mission was presented to the parish by Fr. Peffley: The mission of Holy Trinity Parish is to lead all parishioners to heaven and the beatific vision of the Blessed Trinity.
The Most Reverend Paul Loverde, Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington established the parish of Holy Trinity on June 27th, 2021 to include the geographic areas of Gainesville, Bristow and part of Haymarket, Virginia. Bishop Loverde named Father Francis Peffley as the Administrator and then Pastor in 2023. The diocese provided Holy Trinity with 21.3 acres in Gainesville to build the church complex.
On July 21, 2001, the first Mass for our parish was offered by Fr. Peffley at the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia Monastery on Linton Hall Road in Bristow. There were about 50 future parishioners participating in that first Mass. Daily Masses were celebrated at the Monastery and Sunday Masses were offered at Brentsville High School in Nokesville, VA. Baptisms were performed and parishioners received the sacrament of reconciliation at the Monastery each week. Our first class of First Communicants received their First Holy Communion at the monastery as well. We had to borrow nearby churches for our Confirmation Masses, our First Reconciliation ceremonies, our weddings and our funerals. Religious education classes were in the homes of our catechists and were eventually held in local public schools.
As Bristow, Gainesville and Haymarket grew quickly, the parish swelled! We established some 50 ministries, including several presidea of the Legion of Mary. The Holy Trinity chapter of the Knights of Columbus received its charter for Holy Rosary Council in 2002. These groups carried on the work of the parish and by our 5th anniversary we had grown to almost 2000 families. Father Peffley got to know his parishioners by going house to house and sharing a meal with them. He attended birthday parties, block parties and wedding receptions learning the names and faces of all of his parishioners and introducing them to each other after Mass. Our parish family began to come together. Father Peffley encouraged everyone to join a ministry and get involved in some capacity.
On September 24, 2004, Holy Trinity had its official groundbreaking ceremony on the parish property led by Bishop Loverde and local dignitaries. Through the generous financial support of parishioners and the dedicated work of our building committee, the parish was able to raise sufficient funds to start construction of the 1,200 seat church which also included a chapel, offices, classrooms for faith formation and a library. Additionally we were able to pave a large parking lot surrounding the building. Construction began in February 2006. Parishioners were invited to come on campus and sign the huge I-beam that would be placed in the roof along the length of the church. That same year, parishioners of Holy Trinity started the House of Mercy and began providing food and clothing assistance to the more vulnerable members of our larger community. And finally, on February 2nd, The Feast of the Presentation, 2008, Bishop Loverde dedicated the Church. The church was filled to capacity! We began to offer a Traditional Latin Mass on Sundays. Over the next few years our beautiful rosary windows were installed and the saint windows were added. Once again the parish experienced a tremendous swell in membership.
